First grade is a time for students to become independent readers. They will be introduced to a literature-rich environment to develop an awareness of print as a source of information and enjoyment. Students will learn to use listening and communication skills to participate in classroom discussions. There will be a variety of strategies taught to read new vocabulary and to develop fluency and expression while reading. Story mapping will help each student develop an understanding of character, setting, theme and story sequence in various forms of literature, and students will comprehend both fiction and nonfiction text as well as begin to communicate through writing. First grade students will be introduced to the concept of fractions and continue development in sorting and patterning. Basic addition and subtraction facts will be taught. A manipulative approach will be implemented through Everyday Math using calculators and interactive games with an emphasis on problem-solving. Students will also draw and describe two-dimensional figures and use nonstandard as well as standard units to measure length and weight. Solving word problems will strengthen reading skills as well as develop logical thought processes. Students will develop a wide range of skills and strategies to lay the foundation for success in higher grades. Social Studies and Science will focus on history, famous Americans and the study of living things. Each student will be encouraged to develop good character through stories that teach traits such as responsibility, honesty, kindness, and self-discipline. The first grade teachers are dedicated professionals who work collaboratively for the benefit of all children. Teamwork between parents and teachers will give Rosemont Forest students the knowledge and skills required by a changing world. |
